Someone emailed me the other day, to ask how many pencils I use to create my portraits. The answer is: it depends on the project. For black/white portraits I may use only 5 pencils, because I can create a wide range of effects using degrees of pressure. Color portraits, on the other hand, may require many different colors that are used in multiple layers. The effect of drawing in color pencil is not unlike that of a painting.
