K-9 Officer Qai, Elm Grove Police Dept.

Initial progress on my memorial portrait of Qai.

Initial progress on my memorial portrait of Qai.

I have begun work on my latest portrait, this time it’s a German shepherd named Qai (pronounced “Ky”), a former K-9 unit of the Elm Grove Police Department. Qai passed away this past July at the age of 13 1/2, but he lives on in our memories and the legacy of service he left behind. I plan to donate this finished portrait to the EGPD in his honor. I will deliver it on his birthday. I’ve made a good start on his eyes and brows. You can sense the seriousness of his expression (he is wearing his police gear in the photo from which I am working).

Here is my finished portrait, just in time to donate to his former handler on Thursday, the anniversary of Qai’s birthday.

I delivered Qai’s portrait to his handler Asst. Chief Moulas this evening. It was a great meeting, and he told me a few stories about Qai and his incredible service over the years. What a very special dog he was…
