My good friend Kathy recently lost her cat, Lucky. I am doing a portrait of Lucky to give Kathy as a birthday gift. This is the only photo I have of her cat, something she posted online. I can’t ask her for better photos because that would spoil the surprise.

Beginning work on Lucky’s portrait. Cat eyes can be a bit tricky to draw, they have such depth of color and translucence.

When drawing shorthaired cats, I use more lines, varying their length and weight, to recreate the coat’s texture and variation in color.

Most of Lucky’s head and ears are now 90% done. Whiskers are always time-consuming, and it appears that Lucky had a lot of them!
